Seasol and other seaweed products are organically-based products made from kelp that is harvested in an environmentally sound way and formed into a plant tonic.

seasol for natives

I call it a plant tonic because I don't consider it to be a fertiliser as such but more of a plant pick-me-up and soil revitaliser. The nutrient content in these products is generally quite low so doesn't feed the plant, but rather builds its immune system. It makes the plant more robust and boosts microbe activity, which helps build a better soil structure.

In the past couple of years the Seasol Company has introduced a new product, PowerFeed, targeted at the veggie garden but which can also be used in other areas of the garden.

It has the same plant-tonic characteristics as Seasol but has been boosted with fish emulsion and other compounds to give the plants a proper feed to encourage healthy new growth. The only problem is it is primarily used to produce leaf and vegetative growth, and not flowering.

However, due for release at the start of September is an improved version called PowerFeed Flowers and Fruit. In comparison to regular PowerFeed, it contains chelated iron, 30 per cent more fish emulsion and 30 per cent more liquid compost as well as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to enhance flowering and fruit growth without producing excessive foliage.

The liquid compost in PowerFeed Flowers and Fruit still has the same properties as Seasol, improving soil condition and the availability of nutrients in the soil and encouraging microbial and worm activity. It also has a low phosphorus content, which means it is suitable for all the Australian native plants such as waratahs, kangaroo paws, and bottle brush.

It is particularly good on indoor plants and sensitive plants like ferns and African violets, and it has proven to be a real winner in the veggie garden, particularly on flowering veggies like broccoli, snow peas and broad beans.

Home Community. Keep an eye out for it in your garden centre. Is your garden looking daggy? Native plants, like all living things, need nutrients to survive. If you have soil which is lacking in nutrients you will need to supplement with fertiliser. Also, the phosphorus content may be too high, so read the label very carefully. We recommend the following fertilisers which are ideal, and quite safe, for all natives.

These fertilisers have high nitrogen and low phosphorous so they are quite safe for all natives. In fact, they bring about a magical transformation. Searles Kickalong Organic Plant Food is available in 2. Here at Yuruga Nursery, our gardens are getting so extensive now, that it takes about 10 x 40 kg bags to fertilise them once. You can see that buying larger bags is the only way for us to go, but if you have a small number of trees the smaller pack would be best for you. Incitec, Hi Fert and Searles products are granular fertilisers which can be very easily applied.

Simply tip the fertiliser into a bucket and walk around your garden broadcasting the granules amongst the plants, as if you are feeding the chooks.

Too little is safer than too much, so spread it lightly. Never dump a handful at the base of a plant unless you want to kill it!

These fertilisers must be watered in soon after applying. Searles Kickalong Organic Plant Food fertiliser has to be mixed with water before applying.

The ratio is: 1 tablespoon approximately 10g of fertiliser per 1 cup of water. September is also a good time to fertilise, but since it is unlikely to rain you will need to water it in.

The best way to do this is with light watering in the afternoon, followed by a heavy watering next morning. The afternoon watering softens the granules during the night and much less water is then required to get the fertiliser into the ground.

Native Plants and pH: Most native plants require acid soil. Most local soils are acid. Therefore, it is pretty unlikely that you will need to alter the pH of your soil. Unless your soil is extremely acid to start with, the use of lime or dolomite will raise the pH and make your soil unsuitable for natives. Breaking Up Clay Soils: Gypsum breaks up clay but unlike lime and dolomite, it does so without altering the pH.Learn More.

Fertilising Natives

Are there any species I should not put it on, and if so, what are they? Should I alternate this with something else? How is this different to ordinary seasol? Failure and disappointment is part of the learning process. I use it with seasol - usually 3 applications of seasol and then 1 powerfeed. I do keep them away from my natives - lost a whole lot of banksias once that I put down to a high concentrate mix of seasol. After some advice from Pup I now only use about 10ml per 9 litres but still keep it away from natives.

I was using it at about 40ml per 9 litres so I'm sure it is safe for natives at the lower concentration. Regards Tony "The problem with quotes found on the Internet is that it's hard to be sure of their authenticity. That is to say, if you want to keep your roots in good condition this is the one and I swear by it.

If you go to the Seasol website it will explain all of this and give you a mineral breakdown. Seasol contains higher than average doses of minerals such as boron, magnesium and iron amongst other things. Even the website is a bit lax when i comes to the infoits like a jigsaw puzzle to navigate. The recommended dose is 25ml per 9 litres for foliarindoor and transplanting ,thats what i follow to a tee.

Its like anythingexceed the dose and your looking for disaster. The NPK is written in fine print on the green bottle but nothing on the white bottle. Ipowerfeed every 2 weeks in the growing season and every 4 weeks with a half dose in the off season. Yes i feed in winter, others may not. Again you have to try it for your conditions.

Feed half full doses others half dosesthen feed half in winter and the others not. Sooner or later mother nature will let youknow which method works in her favour. Cheers Alpine. So if you want organic fertiliser like seasol suggests, you are not, because the Nitrogen used to make it powerfeed is a chemical mix.

That is why you will not find it on their web. I would like to be proven wrong by them. Cheers Pup. The Phosphorus is a bit of an oxymoron, as plants need it for as I said roots and wood growth, but our natives can overload on it so beware. Looking on their site it does not say where the Nitrogen comes from. It states such things as PowerFeed is a highly refined liquid fertiliser containing macro nutrients, fish and liquid composts.

It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story. Board index All times are UTC.I don't care what anyone says about Seasol - it saved my Daphne.

After returning from a 4 week long holiday when temperatures where in the 30s and bushfires were about, my Daphne's leaves were yellow and falling off and the plant looked entirely distressed. The Bunnings lady advised me to pour a cap full of Seasol mixed in 9 litres of water in its entirety in the plant. Within a week the leaves were green and this winter the flowers were the most abundant and fragrant ever. I use it on every plant now.

Purchased in May at Bunnings Warehouse. Having recently started growing our own vegetables, a friend recommended Seasol in conjunction with good soil, manure and lots of straw mulch. We use it regularly and have seen a increase in yield and quality of the produce we grow. Prior to using it, though abundant, our strawberries were small in size.

Now, they are significantly larger, sweet and juicy. Tomatoes, zucchini and cucumbers are all producing so well that we have lots to share with family and friends. This Product has served me very well, i have been introduced to it by a friend and have finally succeeded in growing big strong healthy Tomatoes, Cucumber, Capsicum, herbs and spices Seasol is a tried and tested brand that is known to work.

I use this product and am very happy with it. I would like to write this review on their exceptional customer service. Upon calling, the phone was answered immediately by an Australian operator. I was transferred as the lady did not know the answer to my query and again, got an immediate response. Both ladies were polite, prompt and my query was answered in full in under 2 minutes!!!!

Not sure about everyone else here, but I usually find when calling for information rather than new sal Read more. I find this to be excellent all round fertiliser for everything. High humus content should help with clay compacted soils.Seaweed is a brown algae that has been utilised in crop production for centuries, but until recently, scientists have known little about its unique properties.

It wasn't until the late s that equipment required for such delicate analysis was developed. Now there are highly accurate means of quantifying the naturally occurring growth stimulants in seaweed.

This particular type of bull kelp grows in the sea beds, and can reach over 18 metres in height, with a single plant weighing more than kgs. The massive seas of the Great Southern Ocean wash mountains of bull kelp up onto the beaches of King Island and the West Coast of Tasmania, and it is from these beaches that the kelp is harvested. Seasol is a dynamic growth stimulant and plant tonic; it is not by definition a fertiliser.

Scientific trials and field observations over many years have proven its value as a means of promoting healthy vigorous growth in plants, improving resistance to insect and fungal attack, and reducing the symptoms of stress from excessive heat, frost damage and transplanting. Seasol was the first Australian-produced liquid seaweed concentrate.

It provides benefits that a straight fertiliser simply cannot. The Seasol processing plant in Tasmania is truly unique, and the only one of its type in the world. The manufacturing process used to extract the liquid concentrate is also unique.

Seasol is the only seaweed extract in Australia to have the naturally occurring growth stimulants scientifically identified, and this work, conducted by the Australian National University, has been published and is recognised worldwide. Seasol contains naturally occurring growth stimulants, which have a profound effect on the vegetative and reproductive capacity of the plant. Durvillaea potatorum has the highest alginic acid content of any brown kelp species in the world.

It is the alginates in Seasol that contribute to increased uptake of carbohydrates and solids. This means the plant has a degree of frost protection, a higher wilt point and coupled with the growth regulator effect has a stronger more turgid cell structure which reduces the incidence of fungal and insect attack. Nitrogen based fertilisers are often highly soluble and the plant cannot regulate how much it takes up. If confused nitrogen stimulates extensive growth which results in a weakening of the cell wall if used too frequently, or at too higher rate.

By contrast, Seasol promotes cell division as well as cell elongation and this, along with thicker cell walls, renders the plant much less prone to sucking insects and fungal pathogens, which must pierce the cell to inflict their damage. Another difference between Seasol and a fertiliser, is that Seasol is a balanced formulation containing many trace elements, amino acids, vitamins and other compounds essential for plant growth.

Seasol is designed to complement a sound nutritional program and can provide benefits over and above a straight nutritional regime, i.

The root system will be stimulated at any time of the year, even winter, which makes Seasol ideal for winter transplanting. Sign in or sign up and post using a HubPages Network account.
