This article will discuss the basics of torque and torque wrench use. See also related article on Basic Thread Concepts. This article includes a table of various torque recommendations. Threaded fasteners nuts and bolts are used to hold many components to the bike. As a fastener is tightened, the fastener actually flexes and stretches, much like a rubber band. Each fastener is designed for a certain range of tension.

Too much tightening will deform the threads or the parts. Too little preload will mean the fastener will loosen with use. This can damage components, such as a crank ridden with a loose mounting bolt. Loose bolts and nuts are also generally the source of various creaking on the bike. Tension in the fastener depends largely upon the amount of torque tightening and the size of the thread.

Generally, engineers will specify a thread size large enough to handle the anticipated stresses. For example, the M5 bolt of a water bottle cage bolt would not be a good choice for holding a crank.

Even if the bolt were as tight as possible, it would not provide enough force to hold the arm secure to the spindle. The crank-to-spindle interface receives quite a lot of stress, making larger threads M8, M12, M14 a better choice. The amount of pressure applied by a thread can be substantial in order to hold the joint secure. For example, a fully tightened crank bolt can provide over 14, Newton force 3, pounds as it holds the arm in place.

It is commonly believed that bolts and nuts often come loose for no apparent reason. However, the common cause for threaded fasteners loosening is simply lack of tension during initial assembly.

Vibration, stress, use, or abuse cannot typically overcome the amount of clamping force in a properly sized and secured threaded fastener. As a simple rule of thumb, any fastener should be tightened as tight as possible without failure of the thread or the component parts. This means the weakest part of the joint determines the limits of tension, and hence, torque.Camshaft thrust plate bolt: 16 ft lbs.

Thanks in advance! Most impact wrenches won't work, believe me, I've tried some of the best ones. First you need the special tool to keep the pulley from moving, I got mine off Ebay. I install that and lay it on a milk crate with a board on top to keep the tool and pulley from turning. It has to be solid support.

And it takes all that to break it loose. I always think the bolt is going to break first, but so far this has worked for me. Every Honda I've worked on has been like that for the balancer pulley. Good luck. Go to Amazon.

Well worth it! And no, an impact wrench won't do it! You have to have dead pressure to pressure, and that will just bump it in essence That may not be the best way to explain it but oh well Registered OG.

Get a chain wrench. If you do it right, you can use a breaker bar and turn it, so the chain wrench is pushing agianst the frame of the car, so you can use all your strength on the breaker bar.

Ya i ended up gettin mine off, i tryed using the strap around the pulley no luck, so i took the tranny off and put a pry bar in the fly wheel and against one of the tranny bolts i put back in it worked perfect!!! Right off the production line in it had hp and lb-ft of torque.

The engine was only produced for four years before it was replaced by the Honda D17 series engine, however it is still popular to this day. Photo via Flickr. It also appeared in the Honda Del Sol Si until The Honda Civic EX had significantly more horsepower than the engine found in the base model. In the D16Y8 was phased out in in favor of the D17A2 which had larger displacement thanks to a longer stroke and other modifications.

Although this engine had a short production run, it is still a popular engine due to its lightweight design and swap compatibility. For a 1. This technology allows the engine timing to be automatically adjusted at low and high RPMs for maximum performance.

The engine produced hp at 6, rpm and lb-ft of torque at 5, rpm. Although this engine is marketed as a 1. Bore was Finally, the compression ratio was 9. The Honda D16Y8 engine uses an aluminum alloy block as well as an aluminum cylinder head.

The alloy construction helps keep the engine lighter, and light engines mean better acceleration and better fuel consumption. To compensate for the strength given up because of the aluminum block, steel cylinder liners are installed. This considerably increases the engine strength and helps the engine be durable even when the engine is modified. The valvetrain of this engine is a single overhead camshaft. This engine has 4 valves per cylinder, 2 intake and 2 exhaust, for a total of 16 valves on the engine. This can result in damage to the valves!
