Something about cramming as much air into your engine as possible just makes sense. Now, two things likely come to mind when people think of forced induction: turbos or roots style blowers.

But what if we told you that centrifugal offers some serious benefits over the competition? OK, a blower standing through the hood of your ride is just about the coolest thing in the world. It scares children and keeps red light warriors from messing around too much. But like anything else, nothing is perfect and there are some drawbacks to this type of setup. The first one to address is obviously the weight.

They are big bad units, and big and bad translates to heavy. Centrifugal superchargers are perfect for guys looking to get boost without dealing with these major obstacles. Vortech is no new-age brand. Centrifugal superchargers share the same fundamentals as other forms of forced induction but with their own unique approach.

In the world of boost, there are a few reasons to go to a centrifugal supercharger over other forms of forced induction.

He added that this is the case for most superchargers, but it holds particularly true when it comes to this type of centrifugal supercharger, which sits within the engine bay in line with the accessories. No holes or major overhauling is required to make for a good fit. Another key benefit Luasiewicz highlighted is the ease of dialing the engine with one of these units installed. This sound has its place. Instead Luasiewicz likes to set his street cars up with a nice, smooth idle.

So, what about turbos, you ask? They share many of the same characteristics as a centrifugal supercharger but have no parasitic drag on the engine. Not to mention, turbos require major modifications to the exhaust, thus driving up the expense. For a full turbos vs superchargers breakdown, visit here. Vortech does an awesome job at putting together complete kits for modern, classicand even foreign applicationswhich sets any shop up for add-on sales. The centrifugal supercharger kit is a great opportunity to push other big-ticket items that will keep customers happy and ring the cash register. The first and easiest add-on sale is for the classic street rod customer. Remember, a blow-through carb is for a centrifugal or turbocharger setup. Either requires a special carb, but the designs may be a bit different.

Intercoolers and water-meth injection are the next logical step if a customer is looking to make big power. You must log in to post a comment. Why Centrifugal? Like this: Like LoadingA centrifugal supercharger is a specialized type of supercharger that uses natural centrifugal energy to force additional oxygen into an engine.

Increased airflow into the engine allows the engine to burn more fuel which results in increased engine power output. At its most basic, a centrifugal supercharger is driven off the engine's crankshaft and feeds compressed air into the engine. The centrifugal supercharger contains an impeller which spins at high speed to draw air into a small compressor housing volute. When air leaves the impeller, it is traveling at high speed while having a low pressure.

This low-pressure, high-speed air is sent through a diffuser which converts the airflow so that it is high-pressure, and low-speed. The air is then fed into the engine, where the additional airflow caused by increased pressure gives the engine the ability to burn more fuel and have a higher level of combustion.

This results in a faster, more responsive vehicle due to greater engine efficiency.

The main components for any centrifugal supercharger include the impeller, compressor housing, diffuser and transmission. The impeller in a centrifugal supercharger is the main rotating component.

The impeller pushes air into the blower and builds the pressure that translates directly into positive manifold pressure, also known as boost. The impeller must be able to withstand high operating temperatures, and must be durable enough to continually perform at high RPMs.

The snail-shaped design of the compressor housing is a trait unique to centrifugal superchargers. Technically known as a collector, the purpose of this compressor housing is to gather the airflow and deliver it to a downstream pipe.

Although compressor housings can be made from a wide variety of metals or alloys, they are typically formed or cast from aluminum. After the housing is cast, it is then machined to match the impeller design. During assembly of the supercharger the housing is attached to the transmission with securing bolts or band clamps. Located between the impeller and the volute is the diffuser.

Downstream of the impeller in the flow path, it is the diffuser's responsibility to convert the kinetic energy high velocity of the gas into pressure by gradually slowing diffusing the gas velocity. Along with the step up ratio obtained through the drive system, a transmission step up is also required to obtain the impeller speeds necessary to create the desired boost. Additionally, the transmission contains bearings to support the shafts that are attached to the internal gears. Bearings are used throughout the system to help parts move smoothly and to reduce friction and wear.

All centrifugal supercharger bearings must be able to withstand high-speed movement on a constant basis. Proper lubrication is essential for continued centrifugal supercharger performance.

The high speed required for the supercharger to create boost demand adequate lubrication for all moving parts. There are several methods of lubrication used in centrifugal superchargers.

Some designs utilize engine oil to provide lubrication for the supercharger. On enclosed self-contained systems, the lubrication is low weight synthetic oil which is specifically engineered for high-speed use. There are several considerations in choosing the type of supercharger or boosting system for any vehicle.

Three of the more important factors to consider are efficiency, heat transfer, and ability to intercool. Efficiency has both mechanical power consumption and thermal heating of the compressed air factors. A higher efficiency means the supercharger consumes less energy from the engine powering it, and produces less heat. There is substantial heat within an engine compartment, and some supercharger designs allow substantial heat transfer from the engine and other components to the supercharger.

This in turn allows additional heat to be transferred to the air being compressed inside the supercharger, effectively decreasing efficiency. A good illustration of this is comparing a centrifugal supercharger mounted to the side of an engine or in front of the engine, relative to a positive displacement blower mounted on top of an engine.

Comparatively, the centrifugal supercharger has minimal heat transfer from the engine, and is typically positioned in a fresh air stream. The positive displacement supercharger, on the other hand, can heat soak fairly quickly from engine top mounting.

Thermal imaging has been used to illustrate this concept well. For street use, it is well known that air-to-air intercooling offers superior performance relative to air-to-water intercoolers. This is in part due to the fact that air-to-water intercooling for street use involves a secondary heat exchanger, and is actually air-to-water-to-air intercooling.Designated trademarks and brands are the property of their respective owners.

Superchargers Online. More About Us.As government legislation and environmental concerns drive a shift away from fuel-thirsty big-displacement naturally aspirated engines toward smaller thriftier ones, automakers are increasingly employing turbochargers and superchargers to make more power from less fuel.

Both devices serve as a "replacement for displacement" by helping cram the same amount of air a bigger engine would naturally inhale into a smaller engine so they can make the same power when the driver's foot hits the floor.

Oxygen, it turns out, is way harder to get into an engine than fuel. This is also the purpose nitrous-oxide systems serve in the go-fast aftermarket. Let's take a fresh look at the relative merits of turbocharging versus supercharging. The earliest superchargers were all driven by power taken from the crankshaft, typically by gear, belt, or chain. A turbocharger is simply a supercharger that is powered instead by a turbine in the exhaust stream. The first of these, dating towere referred to as turbosuperchargers and were employed on radial aircraft engines to boost their power in the thinner air found at higher altitudes.

That name was first shortened to turbocharger and then to turbo. Each can be used to increase power, fuel economy, or both, and each has pros and cons. Turbochargers capitalize on some of the "free" energy that would otherwise be completely lost in the exhaust.

Driving the turbine does increase exhaust backpressure, which exerts some load on the engine, but the net loss tends to be less by comparison with the direct mechanical load that driving a supercharger involves the biggest blowers powering a top-fuel dragster consume crankshaft horsepower in an engine rated at 7, total horsepower.

But superchargers can provide their boost almost instantly, whereas turbochargers typically suffer some response lag while the exhaust pressure required to spin the turbine builds. Clearly a top-fuel dragster trying to run the quarter in four seconds has no time to waste waiting for exhaust pressure to build, so they all use superchargers, while vehicles tasked with boosting a company's corporate average fuel economy CAFE can't afford to squander precious horsepower on blowers, so they mostly use turbos.

But with the rise of mild hybridization and volt electrical systems, you can expect to see greater use of superchargers driven by freely recuperated electricity stored during deceleration and braking. Mercedes-Benz's new M six-cylinder now arriving in vehicles like the CLS and GLE uses just such a system, as does the similarly sized and configured range-topping engine in the new Land Rover Defender.

Above we noted that the amount of oxygen that an engine can "breathe" is the limiting factor as to how much power it can produce, because fuel-injector technology is more than capable of supplying as much fuel as can possibly be burned with the amount of oxygen in the cylinder. Naturally aspirated engines operating at sea level get air at It doesn't usually work out that way. Compressing intake air adds heat, which along with the added pressure increases the likelihood of engine-damaging pre-detonation or "ping," so the timing often has to be retarded somewhat.

This can limit the amount of time the fuel has to completely burn, and hence erodes some of the power gain. In the end, the typical expectation is that adding 50 percent more air yields 30 to 40 percent more power.

When they're working, turbos and superchargers mostly help to burn more gas, but when they're bolted to an engine that would otherwise be too small to adequately meet the vehicle's needs in terms of acceleration or when towing, etc. One of the ways this happens is by reducing the pumping losses that occur when a big-displacement engine is running at five percent throttle or less—it must work hard to suck air past a mostly closed throttle.

That same amount of power might require a 20 percent throttle opening on the smaller engine, which results in less pumping work. This is why many newer cars don't create enough vacuum to run power brakes, climate-control systems' blend-air doors, etc. Meanwhile, as this list of every supercharged vehicle available in the U.

Of course, all Volvos equipped with 2. This design capitalizes on the strengths of each—supercharger boost at low rpm supplies pressure until the larger turbo spools up, at which point the supercharger is declutched from the crankshaft so as not to rob power.Log in. Joined Apr 24, In hopes that you guys in the know may have some advice I am towing a camper and am new to it, on our first trip the fuel milage was Around 6 mpg.

That kind of fuel cost is going to really hurt my plans of touring the states. I was wondering would a supercharger give better fuel milage when towing? Engine seems to working hard and I was figuring more power correlate to less throttle. Other option would be to upgrade to a diesel which i don't want since it would have to be an Excursion to fit my oversized family.

Joined Mar 23, Joined Jun 15, A supercharger won't help. You need lots of power-which means fuel-to haul that load. I'm guessing your loaded Suburban must weigh people close to lbs?

The trailer is another lbs. Excursion diesels get just 15 mpg hy with no load-with your load they might get 8 mpg-not enough better to make up for owning it.

The Turbo won't help-not with the same gearing. I would look into some sort of aerodynamic add on for the rear of the Suburban to the front of the trailer. If you can make it cleaner, you can pick up mpg. Look at those big rigs with that front spoiler thing on the roof-that is what it is for-better mpg. I would hunt for some sort of add n spoiler, or try a DIY spoiler. You could make it with fiber glass or even plywood. Stick with what you have and work with it. Luck, Charlie.
