Certified Used BMW x1.Where the original X1 wasn't much more than a pumped-up 1 Series, the current car is more like a shrunken X3.
The chunky looks create plenty of space inside, so it's ideal family transport for buyers who feel that a compact hatchback isn't big enough for their needs. But this practicality doesn't come at the expense of driving fun, and enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that the X1 delivers the kind of satisfying handling that BMW is famous for. Both front and four-wheel drive versions are engaging to drive, while the range of three and four-cylinder turbo petrol engines deliver punchy performance combined with decent running costs.
The X1 is as good as ever.
It certainly erases any memories of the first model, which was little more than a high-riding variation of the 1 Series hatchback. The platform is offered with front or four-wheel drive, so unlike the previous X1, there's no rear-wheel-drive option on the current model. A facelifted version of the X1 was launched in and featured exterior and interior changes along with the addition of plug-in hybrid powertrains for the first time.
The facelifted X1 features styling and dimensions that are more familiar to the larger X3 SUV than the 1 Series hatch. That means a raised ride height and a bigger body that creates more space inside than the first generation model, making the X1 a viable choice for buyers needing more space than a compact family hatchback can offer. There are front and four-wheel drive variants available, with the majority of models coming with front-wheel drive as standard.
The sDrive18i has a 1. The sDrive18i has a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while an eight-speed auto is offered as an option. This auto is standard with the 20i. A seven-speed gearbox is offered on lower models. Both petrol models have the option of four-wheel drive xDrive. The diesels comprise the sDrive18d with a bhp three-cylinder, six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive, and the xDrive20d, which has a bhp four-cylinder diesel and four-wheel drive as standard.
This model also has an eight-speed auto as standard, while this gearbox and the 4WD system can be added to the 18d for extra cost. A PHEV model joined the range in the mid-life facelift.
Called the xDrive25e, it uses a 10kWh lithium-ion battery pack, an electric motor mounted to the rear axle and a turbocharged 1. All cars come as standard with sat-nav and infotainment with connected services, a power tailgate, rear parking s ensors, climate control, multifunction steering wheel and a sliding rear bench to boost versatility. On top of this, Sport models add a slightly sportier look, with bigger wheels, black plastic detailing and two-colour interior trim, while xLine cars feature satin aluminium trim and different wheel designs.
The M Sport lives up to its branding, with body coloured exterior trim and an extended bodykit, lowered suspension, pat-Alcantara seat trim and LED headlights. Unlike some rivals, all engines are available in every trim, so you can have the basic 18i petrol in fully-specced M Sport trim, or the most powerful xDrive20i in subtle SE trim. M Sport is the most expensive trim, but you do get the option of the M Sport Plus Pack with exclusive kit.Interior quality is improved, but the design remains fairly bland and unexciting.
What a difference a year makes. There are new lights, less plastic cladding and indicators integrated into the door mirrors, as well as a bolder rear bumper treatment. And it really struggles next to the stylish Range Rover Evoque. There are minor upgrades to materials that were previously a little below par. That said, the new xLine spec does help to lift things. It brings plush leather seats, dark copper interior trim, switchable ambient lighting and luxury floor mats that make the X1 feel quite posh, if not quite as nice as an equivalent Audi Q3.
The xLine gets inch alloys and extra chrome and aluminium on the outside, too. As before, the rear seatback splitsso you can combine people and luggage in different ways. Added to this, you can move the rear seatbacks to an almost vertical angle, giving an extra litres of boot space — up from litres with the rear seatbacks in their usual setting.
While the design changes to the car are minimal, mechanical changes are non-existent, unless you opt for the smooth eight-speed auto gearbox, which replaces the old six-speeder. The diesel engine remains responsive, yet impressively frugal for a four-wheel-drive car, and the six-speed manual is as knuckly in feel and precise in action as ever. At low speeds, the steering is still very heavy, but once up to speed this BMW is pretty sharp to drive.
It still features off-road kit like hill descent control, but the X1 is happier on the road than off it. New Skoda Octavia vRS: prices announced for petrol model. Skip to Content Skip to Footer. BMW X1 2018 review
BMW fans will know the dash layout well — that large centre stack of climate control and media, but the scooped-out centre console design is new to this generation and looks great. All X1s come fitted with the 'xLine' package which adds Pearl Dark and Peal Chrome trim elements, and aluminium door sills.
At mm long, mm wide with mirrors and mm tall, the X1 is 79mm longer end-to-end than the X2, about the same width, and 70mm taller. So yes, the dimensions - exterior and interior - show that even though the X2 sits higher in the SUV line-up, the X1 is bigger in size. Only two paint colours are no-cost options — 'Alpine White' and black, but both look great.
The X1 uses the same the platform as the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer which is a mini people mover and inherits many of its good practicality points. Even at cm tall I can sit behind my driving position with about 30mm knee room to spare and could wear a top hat at the same time. Okay, boot space dimensions. Please switch to a different browser e. It isn't as quiet nor as comfortable as the best family SUVs, but it's a fine buy if you fancy something a little more sporty. It's a bit too pricey to recommend, though.
